Shortly before the break, Vivianne Miedema redeemed the hitherto harmless Dutch team with a well-placed shot into the far corner of the goal. The important goal had a historic element to it: it was Miedema's 100th international goal in 126 appearances - an unparalleled tally.
Thanks to Miedema's anniversary, the Dutch were able to take a more relaxed approach to the second half in Lucerne, which immediately had an impact on the result. Victoria Pelova in the 48th minute and Esmee Brugts in the 57th minute increased the score and ensured a successful start for the quarter-final contenders. Meanwhile, Wales failed to score on their European Championship debut.
