Thun win 3:1 against Basel and can make their historic championship title perfect as early as next weekend.

Nobody really believed it, but there were those observers who wondered whether FC Thun would be overcome by nerves just before the finish line. Mauro Lustrinelli's team had lost twice recently, and the runners-up St. Gallen had gained four points on the Bernese Oberland side. And although the promoted team's lead was still comfortable, optimists in eastern Switzerland harbored faint hopes of a green-white miracle.

On Saturday, these hopes will probably be dashed. FC Thun won the match against FC Basel, which had been called off last week, 3:1.

Christopher Ibayi laid the foundation for the groundbreaking victory in the 28th minute, converting an assist from Elmin Rastoder to make it 1-0.

Shortly after the break, Thun full-back Michael Heule showed his class: after a long ball from Kastriot Imeri, the defender beat Basel's Julien Duranville in a direct duel and scored to make it 2:0 (53'). It was Heule's first ever goal in the Super League.

The young Belgian Duranville did manage to score the equalizer. But Basel's hopes did not last long. Thun reacted in a hard-nosed manner and exploited the space with a lightning-quick counter-attack in the 64th minute. This time, goalscorer Heule shone as the provider of the ball: he set up Elmin Rastoder and the North Macedonian international beat FCB keeper Marwin Hitz to make the final score 3:1. It was Rastoder's 13th goal of the season.

Champions party next weekend?

Thanks to this success, the promoted team took the penultimate step towards their historic first league title. The Bernese Oberlanders now have 74 points and have further increased their cushion over FC St. Gallen. Thun can secure the title under their own steam as early as next Saturday in their home match against FC Lugano. Alternatively, the decision could also be made on the sofa on Sunday if St. Gallen do not win against Young Boys.

While the celebrations can be planned in Thun, the defeat is a bitter blow for FC Basel. Lying in fourth place, Basel lose important points in the tight battle for the European Cup places and must now be careful not to let the competition get ahead of them.
