FC St. Gallen are taken by surprise in Winterthur and lose 1-0, with Matteo Di Giusto scoring the only goal in the 70th minute to secure a fortunate victory.
A ball loss by Lukas Görtler less than three minutes after coming on as a substitute allowed FC Winterthur to score the lucky punch. Di Giusto scored with a curling shot and got the maximum for his new coach, Ognjen Zaric, who had been promoted from assistant to head coach.
It was a sobering Super League debut for St. Gallen's new coach Enrico Maassen, who at 40 is the second youngest coach in the Super League behind the 35-year-old Zaric, but one that can at least be built on for future tasks. His team showed promising signs with strong counter-pressing and well-thought-out passing sequences that led to numerous actions in the Winterthur penalty area.
However, the team from eastern Switzerland were rarely dangerous in the final stages and when they were, Markus Kuster was on hand. The Austrian goalkeeper, who is back in charge of the Winterthur goal following the return of Marvin Keller to YB, did a great job in his own right. He made several strong saves, especially in the 84th minute against Felix Mambimbi, who had replaced Chadrac Akolo up front after just under 70 minutes.
