Former Formula 1 racing team owner Eddie Jordan is dead. According to his family, the Irishman succumbed to cancer at the age of 76.
Jordan made it public last December that he had prostate and bladder cancer. He died surrounded by his family in Cape Town, South Africa.
The eccentric Irishman, who had not made it into Formula 1 as a driver, entered the premier class with his own team in 1991. The team competed under the name Jordan until 2005. During this time, he was able to celebrate four Grand Prix victories. Before his last season as patron, Jordan had already sold the racing team to the Russian-born Canadian businessman Alex Shnaider. However, the team still operated under the name of its founder that year.
Jordan had made it possible for Michael Schumacher to enter Formula 1 in 1991, thanks in part to a financial dowry from Peter Sauber. The German contested the Belgian Grand Prix as a replacement for Bertrand Gachot. The Frenchman, who had fallen foul of the law, had to serve a prison sentence. Schumacher's debut ended shortly after the start due to a clutch failure.
Since Jordan's retirement from the operational business, the racing team has undergone several changes of ownership and name. It was called Spyker in 2006 and 2007, Force India from 2008 to 2018 and Racing Point in 2019 and 2020. Since 2021, the team has been called Aston Martin.
