Keystone-SDA's overview of current events in Switzerland and a look at the performances of the Nati players in the foreign leagues.
Women's Cup
ONE TEAM TREMBLED. Play in the Women's Super League was suspended this weekend, with the round of 16 of the Swiss Cup being played instead. Unlike in the men's competition, however, the favored teams from the top division did not allow themselves to be duped. Rapperswil-Jona struggled the most, beating Winterthur from the NLB 2:1. Julia Ruf and Zdravka Parapunova turned around the early deficit through Amanda Sigrist in the second half. Parapunova redeemed the St. Gallen team from the penalty spot in the 85th minute. The round of 16 will be played on November 8 and 9.
THIS IS HOW THE LEAGUE CONTINUES. The Super League resumes next weekend - with two exciting matches, among others: GC will host leaders Servette-Chênois in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday. The second-placed team from Zurich are currently three points behind Geneva. Meanwhile, third-placed FC Basel will face YB. With a win, the fifth-placed team from Bern could catch up with the leaders again.
Swiss women in foreign leagues
ENGLAND. Iman Beney is clearly in form at Manchester City. After scoring her team to victory against Arsenal last weekend, the youngster from Valais doubled her tally against the next English giants on Sunday. After just over an hour against Liverpool, the 19-year-old was on hand to deal with a rebound and skillfully lobbed the ball into the net from an acute angle to equalize. In the end, the Sky Blues prevailed 2-1 to keep pace with leaders Chelsea, who were without Livia Peng in a 1-0 win over Tottenham (without the injured Luana Bühler).
GERMANY. When Freiburg and Frankfurt meet in the Bundesliga, there is a good chance that a word or two of Swiss German will be spoken on or off the pitch. Because nobody in Germany relies on Helvetic creativity as much as SC and Eintracht. Julia Stierli was the only Swiss player in the starting line-up for Freiburg on Sunday afternoon. Over the course of the match, the Breisgauers sent three more Swiss players onto the pitch: Leela Egli, Aurélie Csillag and Alena Bienz. Meanwhile, Frankfurt relied as usual on Géraldine Reuteler up front and Nadine Riesen at the back. Noemi Ivelj was the only one denied a place at the Swiss Festival. The young Zurich player sat on the bench for 90 minutes for Frankfurt. Reuteler set up Frankfurt's opening goal (20th), but in the end Freiburg prevailed 3:2, allowing Sportclub to catch up with second-placed Wolfsburg after their fourth win in six games. The Wolves lost the top match against Bayern 1:3 without Smilla Vallotto, who was ill, and are now three points behind the champions from Munich.
ITALY. Juventus Turin have yet to get going in Serie A this season. After a goalless draw against Sassuolo in the opener, the Turin side lost 1-0 at home to Como on Saturday. Viola Calligaris started as usual for Juventus, with Lia Wälti coming on after just under an hour. Alisha Lehmann, on the other hand, started up front for Como until she was substituted in the 68th minute.
The number of the week
On Saturday afternoon, crowds made the pilgrimage to the Oberfeld in Ostermundigen. After all, the NLB-based FCO welcomed the Swiss champions Young Boys. 1,277 fans watched the local derby, and Imke Wübbenhorst's team ran out confident 4-0 winners thanks to two goals in each half.
