The federal government is cutting subsidies for Youth + Sport by 20 percent from next year. The reason given for this is the growing number of participants, while at the same time the Federal Council is making savings. Over 680,000 children and young people take part in Youth + Sport events every year.
The record figures and the forecasts mean that the contributions will have to be reduced by 20 percent from 2026 if the credit remains the same, according to a statement from the Federal Office of Sport (Baspo) on Thursday. Partners such as sports associations and cantons have been informed of the latest developments and forecasts.
Parliament approves an annual credit for Youth + Sport. If this is not sufficient, the subsidy rates must be reduced to avoid a credit deficit, according to the Baspo. In the record year of 2024, the credit amounted to around CHF 115 million and was fully utilized.
The Swiss Gymnastics Association (STV) expressed its concern in a statement. This additional cost-cutting measure hits youth sport at its core.
