The Swiss women's team has been defeated for the first time in the Olympic tournament. The quartet led by skip Silvana Tirinzoni loses 5:7 against Japan.
Tirinzoni and her team-mates Selina Witschonke, Carole Howald and Alina Pätz suffered their first defeat after two wins against an opponent who had lost their first two games in the tournament.
The defeat was the result of mistakes made by the Swiss players, particularly in the second half of the match. In addition, the CC Aarau quartet was repeatedly unable to take advantage of inconsistencies in the Japanese team's play.
The Asians brought about the preliminary decision in the seventh and eighth ends. First, they made a deuce, then stole a stone to take a 6:4 lead. In the ninth end, the Swiss were only able to reduce the deficit to 5:6. The deficit was too great a burden, especially as the Japanese had the advantage of the last stone in the tenth end.
Like the Japanese, the Swiss are back in action tonight. They will face the Canadians with skip Rachel Homan in another rematch of the last two (lost) World Championship finals in the evening (from 7.05 pm).
