Giovanni Franzoni is on the verge of his first World Cup victory in the super-G in Wengen. The 24-year-old Italian is clearly ahead of Stefan Babinsky and Franjo von Allmen after 30 racers.
Marco Odermatt is in 4th place, Stefan Rogentin is seventh.
With start number 1, Franzoni set a time on the high-speed course that has so far left the competition scratching their heads. Babinsky lost 35 hundredths, Von Allmen 37 and Odermatt more than half a second in glorious conditions. As the race progressed, visibility became somewhat more diffuse.
Von Allmen, third in Livigno before the turn of the year, almost missed a gate in the upper part of the course, but came close to Franzoni once again. It was the final S that finally made the difference. Odermatt was half a second behind in the Brüggli-S, where he lost crucial speed.
Franzoni's imminent first World Cup victory comes as no more than a rudimentary surprise. On the previous days, he was the fastest in both downhill training sessions by more than a second. In December, he climbed onto the podium for the first time as third in the super-G in Val Gardena/Gröden. In 2021, he was Junior World Champion in the super-G and a year later Junior World Champion in the downhill and combined. His best World Cup result before this season was 4th place at the end of 2024 in Beaver Creek.
The downhill is on the program in Wengen on Saturday. In 2025, Odermatt and Von Allmen secured a Swiss double victory in this event. The start is scheduled for 12.30 pm.
