Julia Scheib launches the Alpine Olympic season with a bang. Lara Gut-Behrami is within touching distance of the podium places in the World Cup giant slalom in Sölden.

Scheib, who came third in last year's season opener after a botched first run, leads by 1.28 and 1.32 seconds respectively ahead of American Paula Moltzan and Croatian Zrinka Ljutic. Gut-Behrami is 22 hundredths behind Ljutic in 5th intermediate place - just ahead of Mikaela Shiffrin, who had to start with bib number 20 after her complicated last season.

The second best Swiss woman after 30 racers is Camille Rast in 13th place, followed by Wendy Holdener (16th), who is competing in her 300th World Cup race.

Scheib, who already made an impressive impression in the preparation, coped best with the difficult, gusty conditions in the upper section. She distanced herself from the competition, especially on the steep slope, which had become even steeper. The artificially added new waves in the flat finish section were not a factor in the course setting in the first run.

The second run starts at 13:00.
