Marco Odermatt creates a good starting position in the first run of the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora. The man from Nidwalden takes second place in the intermediate classification behind Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen.
Odermatt lost 15 hundredths of a second to Kristoffersen in a race that was in serious danger after rain and snowfall in the days before. The two, who have each won the classic on the Podkoren three times in the previous six events, were able to pull away from the competition in terms of time. Joan Verdu from Andorra followed in third place, 52 hundredths behind.
Loïc Meillard could have kept up with the leading duo. The double world champion from Saalbach was still two tenths ahead of Kristoffersen at the last intermediate time, but then lost a lot of ground due to a mistake and is 84 hundredths behind going into the second run. Meillard is in 6th place, two places ahead of world champion Raphael Haaser from Austria.
Thomas Tumler also suffered a mishap in his run. The World Championship silver medallist was 1.3 seconds slower than Kristoffersen, who has been waiting three years for a victory in a World Cup giant slalom. Odermatt, for his part, is aiming for his fourth victory in the basic discipline this World Cup winter.
Luca Aerni was a good two seconds behind and Fadri Janutin will miss out on the second run.
