The Austrian Cornelia Hütter leads the downhill in Val d'Isère after 30 racers, ahead of the German Kira Weidle-Winkelmann and the American Lindsey Vonn.
Hütter caught Weidle-Winkelmann, who started with bib number 1, by 26 hundredths. Vonn, the leader in the downhill rankings, lost 35 hundredths to Hütter in 3rd intermediate place, which would be her tenth victory in the World Cup and fifth in the downhill. The 33-year-old last triumphed in the downhill in Kvitfjell in February.
Sofia Goggia, who was considered the top favorite after the training sessions, missed out on a possible victory with a big mistake in the middle section that cost her a lot of time. The Italian is in 8th place, 62 hundredths of a second behind.
In the absence of the injured Lara Gut-Behrami, Corinne Suter and Michelle Gisin and in increasingly poor visibility, the Swiss racers who have started so far were, as expected, unable to compete for the top positions. The best Swiss-Ski athletes are Jasmine Flury and Delia Durrer, both in 18th place.
