Lara Gut-Behrami speaks out for the first time after her heavy fall and serious knee injury. As previously announced, she will decide whether to continue her career after her rehabilitation.

On Thursday, the Swiss-Ski communications department made public what had been feared. Lara Gut-Behrami suffered a second serious injury to her left knee when she fell a week earlier during training in Copper Mountain, Colorado. The diagnosis was a torn cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and meniscus. The report also included statements from the Ticino native.

A good 24 hours later, Gut-Behrami spoke herself at a press conference organized by KA-EX. The two-time overall World Cup winner was connected via video at the event organized by the manufacturer of functional drinks, where she is an investor, strategic advisor and brand ambassador.

Gut-Behrami had nothing new to announce, and of course she was unable to give an answer to the most important question about her possible future in top-class sport. "I love skiing. But health comes first. I have to get well first - and only when I'm fit again, when I can carve my turns in the snow again, will I know what will happen next. I won't know whether I'll race again until next year."

Gut-Behrami looked back on the initial period after the serious fall and said that patience was required. "I was on the other side of the world and had also suffered a concussion. That's why I traveled back a little later than usual." The return flight took place on Sunday, three days after the incident, which meant the premature end of the season.

The Ticino native also had a plausible explanation for the relatively long time until the diagnosis was announced. She referred to the time last year when she was confronted with new complaints in her left knee. "I hadn't fallen. Nevertheless, I had myself examined. The results were not entirely clear at first either. One doctor even diagnosed me with a torn cruciate ligament."

She then consulted other specialists. It turned out "that the whole thing wasn't that bad. That's why I had hoped that the all-clear would be given this time too". She did not receive the images from the examinations immediately. "It was clear to me that I would have further investigations carried out by specialists in Switzerland who know my knee."

There was another MRI examination on Wednesday. This clarified the severity of the injury. "With a knee that has already been operated on, you are a little more cautious about the diagnosis than with a previously healthy knee. That's why it took a little longer to announce the results."
