Sarah van Berkel, who also became European figure skating champion in Bern in 2011 under her maiden name Meier, was giving the presenter information on the small stage in the foyer when the big moment arrived. Britschgi was driven into the Hallenstadion in a car, the door was opened for him and he was celebrated by the 200 or so people in attendance.

The "Eissport Club Frauenfeld" was there with a banner, young and old mixed together and, of course, former figure skating greats such as Denise Biellmann, the 1981 World and European Champion, did not miss this moment. Britschgi fulfilled selfie and autograph requests before addressing the media.

"This reception is an honor for me. I'm pleased that I was able to make a difference," said the curly-haired man. He still hasn't caught up on the sleep he missed and he hasn't been able to read all the congratulations on all channels. "I'm still overwhelmed and processing it all."

In terms of sport, the north-east Swiss skater will continue at Art on Ice in the Hallenstadion. And then comes the World Championships overseas at the end of March. Olympic tickets will also be at stake in Boston. His long-term goal under the sign of the five rings remains a diploma. "But to be honest, I haven't even thought that far ahead in the last few days."
