In the women's giant slalom in Are, Italy's Federica Brignone leads ahead of her compatriot Sofia Goggia after 30 racers. The Swiss women don't get up to speed and lose a lot of time.

Brignone is well on the way to repeating her victory from last year in the Swedish ski resort. The 34-year-old world champion, who has already won four giant slaloms this season, took advantage of starting number 1 and set a mark that none of her rivals could match.

A surprising 34 hundredths behind her compatriot is Sofia Goggia in 2nd place. The last time the Italian was on the podium was more than seven years ago. Less surprisingly on course for the podium is Norway's Thea Stjernesund, who lost just two hundredths to Goggia. Alice Robinson, the leader in the giant slalom rankings, is 65 hundredths behind and within touching distance of the top three, which she has only missed out on once this season.

The Swiss women were unable to keep up with the leaders. Somewhat surprisingly, the best Swiss-Ski athlete is Camille Rast in 11th place. The Valais skier, who had an unfortunate fall in the slalom in Sestriere almost two weeks ago and subsequently complained of hip problems, is 1.22 seconds behind the leader. Lara Gut-Behrami did not cope at all with the warm conditions and lost four hundredths more than her team-mate. Wendy Holdener is just over one and a half seconds behind.

Mikaela Shiffrin will not be taking part in the decision which starts at 12.30 pm. The American was eliminated in the first race after her 100th World Cup victory.
