Italy's start to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup finals in Canada, Mexico and the USA was a complete failure. Coach Luciano Spalletti's team lost 3-0 to Norway in Oslo.
The final result was already clear after 42 minutes and goals from Alexander Sörloth (14), Antonio Nusa (34) and Erling Haaland. Despite 62 percent possession, the visitors managed just one shot on goal against the Norwegians. It was the Scandinavians' third win in the third game of the current World Cup qualifying campaign, with a goal difference of 12:2.
Belgium were held to a 1-1 draw in their opener in North Macedonia. Although the favorites took the lead in the 28th minute through Maxim De Cuyper, Ezgjan Alioski equalized in the 86th minute while short-handed. Alioski, whose youth club is Young Boys, also holds a Swiss passport. Liechtenstein suffered their third defeat in the same group with a 3-0 loss in Wales.
