Belgium's long-serving defender Jan Vertonghen is ending his career with the national team. The 37-year-old made 157 appearances for Belgium - no compatriot has played more international matches.
Vertonghen missed the opening game at the European Championship in Germany with an ailment, but then played three times from the start and for the entire duration of the game. "Thank you for all the memories, I've lived my dream," the defender, who is without a club after ending his contract with RSC Anderlecht, wrote on his Instagram channel on Friday.
Vertonghen's own goal in the round of 16 sealed the team's exit against France (0:1). It is not known whether he will continue to play at club level.
