The municipality of Köniz near Bern gave its currently most famous citizen, Ditaji Kambundji, a warm welcome on Wednesday. The new world champion in the 100 meter hurdles was celebrated in the evening in the Weissenstein sports hall.
The 23-year-old made sporting history in mid-September. She was the first Swiss athlete to win gold in the outdoor world championships.
During the short ceremony, her former coach Jacques Cordey looked back with Kambundji on her career to date. She always believed in her great goal and hoped that her example would inspire others, said Ditaji Kambundji. When the final of the World Championships in Tokyo was shown again, cheers erupted as if it were a live broadcast.
The mayor of Köniz, Tanja Bauer, presented Kambundji with a hurdle slat with a personal dedication. It was intended to remind the athlete in distant stadiums that almost the entire community back home in Köniz was cheering her on.
Kambundji has also recently had a less enjoyable moment after returning to Switzerland. Around a week ago, she had her four wisdom teeth extracted. "It's still a bit swollen, but it's already much better," she assured the audience.
