It was an auspicious starting position for Young Boys on Sunday. With a win in Lausanne, the Bernese could return to the top of the Super League table. It would probably have been interpreted as a sign that the Bernese were finally on their way back to the top after the last unsatisfactory season and that titles would probably be celebrated again sooner rather than later on Bern's Bundesplatz.

These thoughts seem almost grotesque after the final whistle at Lausanne's Stade de la Tuilière. Giorgio Contini's team went down 5-0 against Lausanne-Sport. This was Peter Zeidler's team, which had shone on several occasions at European level but had only managed one win on the national stage and had repeatedly raised big questions. Questions that Young Boys now have to ask themselves first and foremost.

It quickly became clear that Lausanne's second win in the league would become a reality on Sunday. After just twelve minutes, a player who had never scored in the league before had already scored twice for Lausanne. Theo Bair, on loan from Auxerre, exploited the shortcomings in the once again disorganized defence around the two central defenders Loris Benito and Sandro Lauper in cold blood. And when YB had probably come out of the dressing room with the ambition to turn the game around, the Canadian put an abrupt end to any hopes of Young Boys catching up with his third goal.

Gaoussou Diakité and Nathan Butler-Oyedeji completed Lausanne's bliss with their goals. Bliss that they would have liked to feel in Bern after their return to the top of the table. Instead, after their convincing win in Bucharest during the week, the Young Boys once again pose a huge puzzle as to how these persistent fluctuations in performance can be explained.
