Loïc Meillard probably only has hope left in the battle for the slalom globe. After the first run at the World Cup final in Sun Valley, Idaho, he is clearly lagging behind.
Meillard finished 1.68 seconds behind the best time set by Norway's Timon Haugan. That was enough for 8th place, one and a half seconds behind Henrik Kristoffersen, who is 47 points ahead of the world champion in the discipline rankings.
Haugan's compatriot ranks third in the intermediate classification behind Clément Noël. The Frenchman is the third racer still fighting for the globe. However, with a deficit of 86 points to Kristoffersen, the Olympic champion is reliant on mistakes by his rivals.
The second best of the three Swiss starters was Tanguy Nef. The man from Geneva lost just over two seconds on the best time. Daniel Yule did not cope with the conditions at all. The man from Valais will take a deficit of more than three seconds into the second run.
