Loïc Meillard is clearly the best in the first run of the giant slalom at the World Cup finals in Sun Valley, Idaho. He leads the classification by more than half a second.

The final event of the season and Meillard are a perfect match once again. The Frenchman already won the last giant slalom of the World Cup winter a year ago in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. He is once again enjoying excellent late-season form. A week and a half ago, he won both the giant slalom and the slalom in Hafjell, Norway.

In the first run in Sun Valley, Meillard coped best by far on the special, highly twisting course in unusual terrain. He was 53 hundredths faster than his first pursuer, Lucas Pinheiro Braathen from Norway, who was racing for Brazil. His compatriot Henrik Kristoffersen in third place was 65 hundredths slower than Meillard.

Marco Odermatt, who has already secured victory in the discipline classification, his fourth in a row, is in 6th place after a less than perfect run, just under a second behind. Thomas Tumler, who started with the number 1, lost three tenths more than the man from Nidwalden on the best time. Luca Aerni and Franjo von Allmen were eliminated.

Like Alexis Monney and Stefan Rogentin, von Allmen was also in the race. The three speed specialists were allowed to start because they have collected more than 500 World Cup points this season. Monney, who like Von Allmen was taking part in a giant slalom at World Cup level for the first time, and Rogentin reached the finish line, but were no match for the specialists as they raced around the tight corners.
