Lugano are top of the Super League table again, at least until Sunday. The Ticino side won the top match against Lucerne 2:0.
A French duo provided the redemption for the hosts. Following a cross from Hicham Mahou, who had come on as a substitute a minute earlier, Yanis Cimignani headed home in the 67th minute to make it 1-0. The 23-year-old now has three goals and three assists in his five appearances in the second half of the season. The attacking player seems particularly keen to follow in the footsteps of leading player Renato Steffen, who is currently injured. Shortly before the end, Hadj Mahmoud made everything clear with his fourth goal of the season.
While Lugano bounced back after their last two games without a win, the visitors from central Switzerland produced little. Lucerne concentrated on defending for a long time, meaning there was hardly any flow to the game. After Cimignani's follow-up goal, the tough game picked up a little, but Lugano never had to seriously fear for the three points.
After the away team had prevailed in each of the last three matches between the two teams, the home team won again. Lugano are now two points ahead of FC Basel, who host Lausanne-Sport on Sunday, and three points ahead of Lucerne.
