Two top-class duels between league rivals will take place in the last 16 of the Champions League. Atlético Madrid take on defending champions Real and Leverkusen with Xhaka play FC Bayern.
Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool FC were also drawn against each other on Friday lunchtime. Ardon Jashari and FC Brugge will face Aston Villa, Gregor Kobel and Dortmund will meet Lille and Zeki Amdouni and Benfica Lisbon will face FC Barcelona. The two Dutch surprise teams will play against Arsenal (Eindhoven) and Inter Milan (Feyenoord Rotterdam).
These are promising fixtures. Even before the draw in Nyon, it was clear that Atlético Madrid (5th in the league phase) or Leverkusen (6th) would face Real Madrid (11th) or Bayern Munich (12th), and Paris Saint-Germain (15th) would have to deal with Liverpool (1st) or Barcelona (2nd). Similar to the ice hockey play-offs, the rankings after the league phase were decisive in the distribution of opponents. In each case, two teams in neighboring positions formed two possible opponents.
The round of 16 will take place on March 4/5 (first legs) and March 11/12 (second legs).
