Fischer has been given a contract until the summer of 2028, as announced by the team at the bottom of the table. He has not worked in football since leaving Union Berlin on November 15, 2023.

Although he had to leave the East German club, he left a lasting impression there. In his first season as coach of Union Berlin, he took the team up to the Bundesliga. In his first four seasons there, he achieved 11th, 7th, 5th and 4th place. 4th place was synonymous with qualifying for the Champions League, where his opponents included Real Madrid. In 2023, he was named Coach of the Year in Germany.

Fischer took time to recharge his batteries after leaving Union Berlin. Although he was repeatedly linked with clubs, he was waiting for the right offer - he made no secret of the fact that he would prefer to work in the Bundesliga again.

Now he has been offered this opportunity at Mainz, with Swiss captain Silvan Widmer. He faces a challenging task there. Mainz have won just one of their 13 league games this season and are bottom of the table with six points. The gap to the first non-relegation place is six points. However, Fischer has already proven several times that he can get the best out of a team. He won the double with Basel in 2017 after leading FCB to the league title the year before.

Fischer is the second Swiss coach at Mainz after Martin Schmidt.
