Too much in the end. Marco Odermatt is overcome with emotion after the giant slalom at the World Cup final in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Odermatt has to stop for a moment, interrupting his conversation with the Swiss TV reporter in the finish area. He stands there with the small crystal globe for winning the giant slalom - and with tears in his eyes, no longer able to speak. It is a moment that makes it clear what a huge burden has just been lifted, that it is anything but a matter of course what the best skier of the moment has once again delivered over the past few months.
It has been another incredible season, said Odermatt. "The fact that it works out like this every time is really special." He feels empty. Performing again and again, weekend after weekend, takes an incredible amount of energy, he also said. When trying to explain what this emptiness feels like, he had to pause for a moment. "You give so much to this sport, every day, the team, the family. I don't know what to say anymore either." Then he lost his voice, only to speak calmly again. Everyone around him, be it the coaches, the service staff or the representatives of the sponsors, all deserved a crystal ball.
He himself was presented with crystal ball number 13 on Wednesday.
