Miro Aaltonen, Kloten's top scorer until his doping mishap a year ago, scores for the first time this season in Bern's 27th championship game. These are the facts from Friday's five games.
Miro Aaltonen personifies SC Bern's major crisis. A year ago, he scored 20 goals for Kloten by Christmas - and almost one point per game. This season, at least in the National League, he just didn't want to score. That changed in Bern's home game against the ZSC Lions at the start of the second period: Aaltonen scored his first championship goal with a shot from an "impossible angle".
Aaltonen was able to enjoy his first personal sense of achievement because Bern also won once again. Joel Vermin scored his fourth goal of the season - all scored in November - to give Bern a 2-1 home win against the ZSC Lions.
Patrick Geering, the captain of the ZSC Lions, played his 1000th game in Bern - all for the ZSC Lions. Geering will be honored at the next home game.
A goal for Einar, too
It wasn't just Miro Aaltonen's heart that was lifted. The Swede Einar Emanuelsson also scored his first goal of the season. Emanuelsson's goal in the derby against HC Ambri-Piotta (5-1) put Lugano on course for victory with a 2-1 win.
The new surroundings obviously inspired Emanuelsson. The forward moved from Lulea to Lugano this week. Emanuelsson had never scored in Lulea's last 36 games. He had only managed two assists this season. Lugano signed Emanuelsson until the end of next season.
Davos turnaround
Eight days after their first home defeat (4:6 against Ambri-Piotta), HC Davos narrowly avoided a second loss in front of their home crowd. The Lakers led 3:1 in Davos until the 48th minute, when Jacob Larsson (2 minutes), Nico Dünner (4 minutes) and Igor Jelovac (5 minutes plus game time) conceded 31 penalty minutes in the space of seven minutes. The permanent Davos powerplay led to a 3:3 equalizer. The Lakers also led three times in the penalty shootout before Tyler Moy failed to beat goalie Luca Hollenstein with his third penalty (after scoring twice). The Lakers won just two of their last twelve games.
Ajoie's third away win
Kloten suffered their first defeat against Ajoie this season in their third encounter. Julius Nättinen was the match-winner for the Jura side, who are improving their form, with two early powerplay goals. The Airport Cities chased this deficit in vain. Ajoie won in Zurich for the second time in a week, having already beaten the ZSC Lions 3-2 a week ago. Prior to that, Ajoie had only won away in Bern.
Biel woke up too late
Biel overslept the first half of the game (not for the first time this season). Gottéron were 3:0 ahead after 29 minutes. Two juniors - Jonah Neuenschwander (16) and Leo Braillard (20) - reduced the deficit to 2:3 for Biel, who lost for the first time in three games.
