The Swiss Fabian Rieder and Cédric Zesiger will have a new coach at struggling Bundesliga club FC Augsburg.
The club and Sandro Wagner have mutually agreed to terminate their contract, which runs until 2028. The 38-year-old only took over at the beginning of July.
Wagner was working as head coach of a professional team for the first time; he had previously been assistant to national coach Julian Nagelsmann. Although he won the first two competitive matches with Augsburg - including the first cup game - he only managed two more victories in the subsequent rounds. After twelve championship rounds, the team is 14th in the table with ten points. On Saturday, Augsburg conceded a 3-0 defeat away at Hoffenheim. They are just two points clear of the play-off places. They also lost their second game in the cup against lower-ranked Bochum.
"In discussions after the game in Hoffenheim, we realized that we lack the belief and conviction to achieve a turnaround in the current constellation," FCA managing director Michael Ströll was quoted as saying. For the three remaining games this year, Manuel Baum, a familiar figure, will take over the team. The 46-year-old already held this position at Augsburg from the end of December 2016 until April 2019.
