Lando Norris celebrates a start-finish victory in the Formula 1 sprint race in São Paulo. An early accident by Oscar Piastri further tilts the world championship duel in the Briton's favor.

Piastri retired after just a few laps following a driving error and is now nine points behind Norris, his team-mate at McLaren, in the overall standings. The Mercedes duo of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell completed the podium in the sprint race.

Defending champion Max Verstappen finished fourth in the Red Bull, with the Dutchman 39 points adrift of the championship leader. The four-time world champion already has the chance to close the gap again on Sunday at the fourth-last Grand Prix of the year.

There were still rain showers in the Brazilian metropolis in the morning, but the track in Interlagos increasingly dried out in time for the sprint. However, the water was still building up in some places, which proved to be Piastri's undoing after five laps. The Australian drove over the damp kerbs and promptly spun off the track.

Sauber driver Nico Hülkenberg and Franco Colapinto in the Alpine had a similar mishap in the same place. Hülkenberg was the only one of the trio to return to the track after a race interruption at the rolling restart. After that, the action calmed down somewhat. Norris kept pursuer Antonelli at bay, celebrated his second win in the fifth sprint of the season and scored another eight points on his way to the world title.

The two Sauber drivers Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto missed out on the points. While the German finished 16th after his crash, the local hero from Brazil did not finish the race after an accident on the last lap and was classified 18th.
