Canada escapes embarrassment at the Ice Hockey World Championship and narrowly beats Norway 6:5 after overtime.

The big favorites Canada had an unexpectedly difficult time against the blatant underdogs Norway. The Scandinavians played courageously, took the lead four times in the course of the game (including 5:4 in the 50th minute through Thomas Koblar) and sniffed at the big sensation. It was not until just under two minutes before the end of regulation time that Ryan O'Reilly rescued the reeling North Americans with a late equalizer to make it 5:5 and send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, however, it took just 29 seconds before Mark Scheifele made sure of a quick decision in favour of the Canadians. It was Scheifele's third goal of the evening after he had already brought his team back into the game twice in the first period after Norway had taken the lead. Despite the narrow defeat, Norway was at least rewarded with a well-deserved point for a spirited performance.

Finland confident after a false start

Finland showed no weakness in their clear 7:1 victory over Latvia. Although the Latvians surprisingly took the lead after just ten seconds through Rudolfs Balcers, the northern Europeans dominated the game at will thereafter.
