In the 1000th downhill of the Ski World Cup, Marco Odermatt is in first place after 30 racers. The man from Nidwalden is leading in Val Gardena/Gröden ahead of his team-mate Franjo von Allmen and the Italian Dominik Paris.
With bib number 14, Odermatt fought a close duel with Von Allmen in the first of the two runs on the Saslong, which was held on a shortened course. In the end, the two Swiss racers were separated by just 15 hundredths. Last year, Odermatt had already prevailed over Von Allmen in Val Gardena/Gröden.
Odermatt could therefore celebrate his 50th victory in his 182nd World Cup start, his sixth in the downhill. The 28-year-old had already triumphed in Beaver Creek in the first downhill race of the season. For Von Allmen, who is four years younger, it would be the ninth World Cup podium finish of his career. Third place went to veteran Dominik Paris. The 36-year-old Italian won the downhill in Val Gardena/Gröden in 2023.
In a race with close time gaps, the other Swiss racers currently occupy 7th (Alexis Monney), 9th (Marco Kohler), 13th (Niels Hintermann), 14th (Justin Murisier), 18th (Lars Rösti) and 21st (Stefan Rogentin). Aleksander Kilde fell well short of the top places in the fourth race since his comeback. The Norwegian is in 26th place, 1.56 seconds behind Odermatt.
The anniversary downhill (542 men's and 458 women's runs) was started over an hour late due to fog. There were also interruptions during the race due to limited visibility.
