Three goals conceded in twelve minutes broke FC Basel's back in Lucerne. With hair-raising defensive errors, it made it easier for the hosts around match-winner Oscar Kabwit to turn the game around in the final quarter of an hour. Everything seemed to be in place for a second victory under coach Stephan Lichtsteiner, which was particularly valuable for morale. Bénie Traoré with a penalty (45') and substitute Julien Duranville (63') had turned 0:1 into 2:1 for Basel.
Then the final quarter of an hour dawned and Basel completely lost control. Kabwit, who moved to Lucerne on loan from his native Congo last summer, scored with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area to make it 2-2. Basel's defending was already poor in this action. Six minutes later, it was simply catastrophic. The pressing of Lars Villiger and Kabwit threw the FCB defense off balance. The young Marwin Akahomen played a cross-field pass directly to the feet of Kabwit, who played Villiger in perfectly. The final goal was scored by the outstanding 20-year-old Kabwit after a mistake by Léo Leroy.
Stephan Lichtsteiner, who has lost five of his seven games in charge of FCB in all competitions, was left shaking his head in disbelief. Ahead of next weekend's visit to Lausanne, FC Basel are only in 5th place, level on points with FC Sion. Luzern, on the other hand, are only three points away from the top 6, having now won three times in a row, each time scoring four goals of their own.
