"Our thoughts are with Pascal's family and friends, to whom we express our deepest condolences," the association wrote on Instagram.

Pascal Buchs had been a member of the Swiss Orienteering elite squad since 2018. He regularly competed in the World Cup and won medals at Swiss championships. Most recently, he ran to silver with the relay team at the World Military Championships last fall.

Earlier this week, a top Swiss athlete, 26-year-old snowboard crosser Sophie Hediger, died in an avalanche accident in Arosa.
