Noè Ponti moves confidently into the semi-finals in the 100 m dolphin. Only Kristof Milak from Hungary and the Canadian Josh Liendo are faster than the Ticino native in the preliminary heats.
Ponti, who sensationally came third at the Olympics three years ago in Tokyo in his showpiece discipline, completed the two lane lengths in the Olympic pool in 50.65, half a second faster than his Swiss record. But the 23-year-old from Ticino, who finished fifth in the double-distance event at the Olympics on Wednesday, knows that he will only really be challenged in the semi-finals in the evening.
The best time in the morning was set by Milak, who swam in the same preliminary heat as Ponti and finished in 50.19. The American Dressel, 2021 Olympic champion in the 100 m dolphin ahead of Milak, came sixth in the preliminary heat in 50.83.
