A bitter blow for the Swiss women's national team: Ramona Bachmann will miss the home European Championships due to a knee injury.
Bachmann suffered the injury on Wednesday during training in Magglingen and without any outside influence, as the Swiss Football Association announced on Thursday evening. The striker had received the devastating diagnosis in the morning following an MRI examination: A torn cruciate ligament in her left knee. The 34-year-old attacking player will therefore be out for a long time and will miss the home European Championships.
Bachmann has only played a minor role in the national team of late, playing just 38 minutes in the six Nations League games this year. Nevertheless, with her immense experience, she would have been an important piece of the puzzle in the Swiss team. She has 153 international caps, in which she has scored 60 goals, and has played in the four finals of the women's national team to date. Only Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic (74) has scored more goals for Switzerland.
There was a fitness debate about Bachmann. At the beginning of the week, national coach Pia Sundhage said that the Lucerne native was not fit enough at the moment. Bachmann herself contradicted this and said that tests had shown that her fitness level was very good, but that she was overtraining. The fact is that she left her American club Houston Dash at the end of April and returned to Europe to assist her wife with the birth of her son. In addition, she was not on the pitch for Tuesday's training session.
The Swiss start the European Championship at home against Norway in Basel on July 2. On July 6, they will face Iceland in Bern, and on July 10, they will face Finland in Geneva to conclude the preliminary round. If they make it into the top 2 of the group, they will qualify for the quarter-finals.
