After the first run of the World Cup giant slalom in Are, Camille Rast leads by a narrow margin ahead of Julia Scheib.

Camille Rast led the way with bib number 2 and an attacking run, followed immediately by Julia Scheib. The Austrian's run was much smoother by eye, and the timekeeping gave Rast an advantage of eleven hundredths.

Scheib is clearly ahead in the battle for victory in the discipline rankings: the four-time winner of the season has a cushion of 89 points over Rast ahead of the last two giant slaloms.

With the American Paula Moltzan (0.56 seconds behind) and the New Zealander Alice Robinson (0.60), only two skiers were able to stay within one second of the top duo.

Shiffrin with a big mistake

Mikaela Shiffrin was still half a second ahead of Rast at the last intermediate time before she approached a key section too directly. After half a stint, the overall World Cup leader is outside the top 10, 2.29 seconds behind.

Sara Hector was just as fast as Shiffrin. However, the Swede got into trouble at the same gate and even dropped out of her home race.

Kasper second best Swiss

The second-best Swiss skier after half a stint is Vanessa Kasper. The skier from Graubünden lost 2.79 seconds on the best time, which puts her in 18th place after 30 racers have started.

Sue Piller and Wendy Holdener lost around 3.5 seconds to their team-mate Rast and are in doubt as to whether they will be able to take part in the second run. This starts at 12.30 pm.
