Camille Rast creates a good starting position in the first run of the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora. The skier from Valais is in the lead - albeit by a narrow margin.
Rast, who started from the top group for the first time after her recent strong performances in the giant slalom, opened the race and set a time in the snow that no other skier could match. Paula Moltzan and Lara Colturi, who lost 33 and 37 hundredths respectively on the Swiss, were the first to follow. Mikaela Shiffrin and discipline leader Julia Scheib also kept their gaps within limits at 38 and 41 hundredths respectively.
Slalom world champion Rast has also shown consistently strong performances in the "Giant" this season. After 15th place at the start, she has recently finished in the top 5 four times in a row. Last week in Semmering, she achieved her best World Cup result in this discipline to date with second place. The 26-year-old was just 14 hundredths off winner Julia Scheib.
Rast's team-mate Wendy Holdener had more trouble in the race in Slovenia. After a mistake, she lost 2.32 seconds on the leader and is currently in 18th place. Vanessa Kasper was over three seconds behind and must hope to qualify for the second run for the fifth time this season.
Alice Robinson, winner of the giant slaloms at Copper Mountain and Tremblant, remains without points for the second time in a row. As in Semmering, the New Zealander was eliminated.
