Camille Rast is also among the front runners in the giant slalom at Kronplatz. The skier from Valais is in 2nd place after the first run. Federica Brignone is holding up well on her comeback.
Only Sweden's Sara Hector mastered the course in South Tyrol, which was five gates longer and almost 20 seconds slower than last year, faster than Kranjska Gora winner Rast. The difference is 15 hundredths. A quarter of a second behind Rast is the discipline leader Julia Scheib in 3rd place. Mikaela Shiffrin is already half a second off the podium in fourth place.
Federica Brignone made a strong comeback in the second-to-last giant slalom before the Olympic home games. The overall World Cup winner of the previous season, who is still in pain, finished in 7th place with bib number 13, 1.18 seconds behind Hector.
She is not here for a great result, but for a great personal success, emphasized Brignone in the run-up to the race. "It's a test for my body and my mind to see if I can race. There are good days and not so good days. The pain is always there," said the 35-year-old from Milan, a good nine months after breaking her tibia and fibula and tearing her cruciate ligament at the end of last season at the Italian Championships. "It was pretty emotional, I was blocked at the start of the run. But it's a wonderful day," she said after her run.
Wendy Holdener, who started the race three numbers behind Brignone, lost over four seconds on the best time and is not in the second run - unlike Vanessa Kasper (18th), Sue Piller (27th) and Dania Allenbach (29th).
The second run starts at 1.30 pm.
