FC St. Gallen win in Basel for the first time in four and a half years and secure 2nd place in the Super League with a 3-1 win.

Had it not been for the high-flyers from Thun, FC St. Gallen would also have been worthy champions. With 69 points, the club surpassed its previous record in the Super League from the 2019/2020 season, although the 68 points it scored back then came in 36 games. To round off the current season, St. Gallen will face Thun in the 38th round on Saturday before the cup final against Stade Lausanne-Ouchy the following weekend.

Enrico Maassen's team secured the win in Basel with goals from Aliou Baldé (51st), Carlo Boukhalfa (78th) and Nevio Scherrer (89th). Baldé scored his eleventh goal of the season, Boukhalfa scored for the twelfth time one day after signing an early contract extension, and 18-year-old Scherrer celebrated his Super League goal debut.

FC Basel's defense did not look good for all three goals because it acted too passively. Coach Stephan Lichtsteiner's team disappointed once again, not only at the back but also up front. Defender Nicolas Vouilloz only scored in the 88th minute to make it 1:2, bringing hope of a point back to St. Jakob-Park for just a handful of seconds. Scherrer restored St. Gallen's two-goal lead almost immediately.

While St. Gallen will, in the worst-case scenario, qualify for the Conference League next season, FC Basel will miss out on the potentially lucrative international competition. On Sunday in Lugano, they will only be playing to defend 5th place in the long-distance duel against YB.
