Geneva's Jérémy Desplanches meets swimming legend Michael Phelps at a sponsor event and poses for a photo with him. These are the Olympic splinters from Tuesday.
Desplanches meets the GOAT
Swiss swimmer Jérémy Desplanches, who retired last Saturday, meets another retired swimmer at a sponsor event. He poses for a photo with 23-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps. The two met eight years ago, back then in the semi-finals of the 200 m medley in the Olympic swimming pool in Rio. While Desplanches was eliminated in this heat, the American made it to the final as expected and won gold. Desplanches also wrote under his Instagram post that he was much more nervous at this meet on land than in the water.
Nowitzki as a noble fan
Former basketball superstar Dirk Nowitzki is following the Olympic Games in Paris up close. At the 3x3 final evening at the Place de la Concorde, the German flag bearer from 2008 sat in the second row and joked around with the fans. To the sounds of "Sweet Caroline", Nowitzki raised his arms in the atmospheric arena and sang along to the lyrics. The now 46-year-old has competed in the Olympics once, but has never won a medal.
Animal visit to Tahiti
There was a surprise animal guest at the Olympic surfing competition off the coast of Tahiti. During the semi-final pairing between Brisa Hennessy from Costa Rica and Tatiana Weston-Webb from Brazil, a humpback whale rose from the waves of the Pacific and piled up before plunging back into the water.
