FC Zurich continues to slide into crisis. In its first game under interim coach Carlos Bernegger, it suffered a 3-0 defeat in Lausanne. It was the seventh defeat in the last eight games.
As the final whistle blows, Lindrit Kamberi thumps the ball with his hand into the Lausanne sky. The Zurich defender did so with a vehemence that he and his team-mates had completely lacked in the previous 90 minutes. After an anemic performance by the visitors, the hosts from Lausanne were already 3:0 up at the break.
Carlos Bernegger's personnel changes did not bear fruit - on the contrary. In his first game in charge, the interim coach put his trust in Yanick Brecher between the posts and also gave the captain's armband to the long-time regular goalkeeper, who had to relinquish his status as number one under Denis Hediger to Silas Huber, twelve years his junior.
"A different team in training"
Brecher experienced a frustrating return to the pitch. He did make a few good saves. But the decisive second goal conceded was the result of a misunderstanding between him and young central defender David Vujevic. The third goal was a mirror image of the entire season. Vujevic, only 19 years old, unfortunately deflected a harmless long-range shot from Jamie Roche into his own goal.
"We weren't good in all areas. It's inexplicable and difficult to find the right words," Yanick Brecher told SRF after the game. He added that they had seen a different team in training over the past two weeks. "There was fire and life in it," said Brecher. "Today, we didn't bring it onto the pitch from the very first minute. We all have to take our own noses to the grindstone."
Interim coach Carlos Bernegger echoed the same sentiment: "We disappointed our fans once again. We now have to process the game well and analyze it properly. It's important that we continue to work seriously and stay focused." After all, the gap to Grasshoppers is still the same.
Still a reassuring cushion
The fact that their city rivals GC also lost and that they still have a cushion of seven points on their direct rivals for relegation is the only good news for FCZ, who are still number one in the canton of Zurich despite their seventh defeat in the last eight games - in third-last place in the Super League.
Yanick Brecher put it aptly: "We have four games left to finish the season cleanly." That must be the goal for interim coach Carlos Bernegger, who will make way for Marcel Koller in the summer. On Saturday, FCZ will visit the Schützenwiese in Winterthur. Let's hope that all those who support the Zurich club don't wait until the final whistle to release their energy.
