Shoko Miyata should have been captain of the Japanese women's team at the Summer Games. Miyata won the bronze medal on the balance beam in the apparatus finals at the World Championships in Liverpool two years ago. As a team, Japan's women have been waiting for a medal since the 1964 Olympic Games (when they won bronze).

Before being excluded from the team, Miyata admitted that she had broken the rules - at the end of June in a private setting in Tokyo. Smoking and alcohol consumption are banned in Japan until the age of 20.
