HC Davos continues to ride a wave of success. Against the SCL Tigers, the sovereign leader of the National League won 5:3 for the third time this week after trailing. The facts from Saturday.
HC Davos, beaten only by the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in 19 games this season, celebrated its ninth win in a row. With 52 out of a possible 57 points, the record champions further extended their record start in the National League.
In front of the eyes of record internationals Andres Ambühl and Marc Wieser, who were given a fitting send-off before the game in the sold-out Davos Arena, the HCD delivered a wild ride against a tough Langnau team: five goals in the final period decided the game. Thanks to an underpaid goal by Yannick Frehner in the 55th minute to make it 4:2, Davos' eighth win after trailing was secured. For the Tigers, it was their third narrow defeat in a week.
ZSC with redeeming victory in crisis derby
After three weeks without a win, the ZSC Lions were able to celebrate again for the first time in the derby in Kloten. Captain Patrick Geering put the visitors ahead shortly after half-time, Thierry Bader increased the lead to 2:0 in the final period. Kloten came close again through Petteri Puhakka, but Denis Malgin and Mikko Lehtonen scored into the empty net to make the final score 4:1. For ZSC coach Marco Bayer, this was the first step out of the crisis, while Kloten suffered four consecutive defeats for the first time this season. Before the crisis derby, ZSC captain Geering had expressed his support for his head coach: "We definitely want to continue working with Marco. We had success with him last year. It's up to us to back him up."
Gottéron misses out on 3rd win this week
At the end of September, Fribourg-Gottéron had caused a change of coach at their arch-rivals with a 5-1 win in Bern. On Saturday, the SCB took revenge in the second Zähringen derby with a 2:1 win on penalties. Marco Müller put the visitors ahead in the middle third with a shot from an acute angle before Fribourg's top scorer Sandro Schmid equalized the game 22 seconds before the end of regulation time. Schmid, who had extended his contract with Fribourg by four years on the same day, scored again in the penalty shoot-out - albeit as his team's only scorer. Swedish defender Hardy Haman Aktell secured the extra point for SCB with two converted attempts.
Lausanne's sharpshooters score
Swiss international forward Ken Jäger initiated Lausanne's 5-1 home win against Ambri-Piotta with his 50th goal in the National League. Theo Rochette (12), Drake Caggiula (8), Damien Riat (7) and Erik Brännström (6) were the Vaud team's top four scorers in the current championship. It was the third-placed team's fourth win in the last five games - after four defeats in a row. Ambri-Piotta, on the other hand, slipped to penultimate place.
Servette with highest win of the season
Just 24 hours after the 5-2 defeat in Ambri (with five goals conceded in the first period), Servette showed a completely different face in their home game against Biel. Geneva were 4-0 up by the 19th minute thanks to two powerplay goals from Markus Granlund and a brace from Vincent Praplan. In the final period, Giancarlo Chanton and Simas Ignatavicius scored to make the final score 6:0 - Geneva's highest win of the season. Biel, on the other hand, remain weak away from home: the Seelanders have only managed two wins in nine games, with only bottom-placed Ajoie picking up fewer points away from home.
Lugano's run continues
Lugano continued its comeback with a 3-0 home win against the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers. All the goals were scored by foreigners: Brendan Perlini, Carl Dahlström and Jiri Sekac. The Ticino side, who had only won once in their first eight games of the season, thus celebrated their fourth success in a row. The trend is clearly pointing upwards: Coach Tomas Mitell's team has won eight of its last eleven games. The gap to the top 6 is now only five points. Meanwhile, surprising second-placed Rapperswil-Jona suffered their third defeat in a row.
