The Federal Council supports the Swiss bid for the 2038 Winter Olympics, and the cantons have also expressed their support in the consultation process. However, the Greens, SP, Federation of Trade Unions and SVP are calling for an optional referendum.

The Federal Council is in favor of the 2038 Winter Olympics as a great opportunity for Switzerland. The federal government wants to support the staging of the Games with a maximum of CHF 200 million. Any deficits should be borne by private individuals.

The Green Liberals, FDP and Center Party see opportunities in the project. The SP, Greens and SVP, on the other hand, are skeptical or even hostile. Should the federal government have to contribute financially to the organization, the SVP is calling for a referendum-capable bill. The SP, the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions (SGB), the Greens and some cantons are also calling on the Federal Council to make the federal decision subject to an optional referendum in order to ensure binding democratic legitimacy.
