Switzerland misses out on a top place in the women's epee team competition at the European Championships in Basel. The hosts' medal hopes come to an end in the quarter-finals.

After a hard-fought opening victory against Germany (42:39), the Swiss lost their duel with world champions Poland 38:43 after leading for a long time.

Angeline Favre of all people, who ensured a successful start to the European Championships for Switzerland by winning the bronze medal in the singles on Tuesday, was unable to pull off the surprise against the heavy favorites. The player from Valais went into the final match with a narrow 33:32 advantage.

The men's epee team competition will take place in Basel on Saturday. Max Heinzer will give his farewell performance as a fencer.
