FC Basel win 2:1 against St. Gallen in dramatic fashion. Kevin Carlos scores for FCB for the first time in the Super League - twice. The winning goal is scored seconds before the end.
The fifth minute of stoppage time is already underway in front of a good 27,000 spectators at St. Jakob-Park. Dominik Schmid crossed again from the left flank. St. Gallen's Lukas Görtler complains that the ball is already out of play. Marin Soticek doesn't care, the Croatian heads against the crossbar and Kevin Carlos dusts it off to make it 2:1.
The former Yverdon striker had already scored in the first half to make it 1:1; these were the first two goals in the championship for FCB by last year's co-top scorer. The Basel side earned the win after a difficult opening phase with an improved performance and because they were more energetic in the final quarter of an hour than the visitors from eastern Switzerland.
"You have to believe in victory right to the end," said a beaming Xherdan Shaqiri in front of the "Blue" microphone. "We were rewarded for that." It was the second prestigious home win for Basel after the 1:0 against YB, who moved up to 5th place at the expense of St. Gallen.
FCSG, on the other hand, are going through a difficult phase, with just one point from their last three games. They started with a lot of energy, took the lead in the 7th minute after a quick counter-attack by Willem Geubbels and dominated the first half hour. After the equalizer, however, coach Enrico Maassen's team lost control and in the end also appeared to be a little less physically fit than Basel.
