Women's Super League

THE GAME OF THE WEEK. Friday evening saw a rematch of last season's play-off final at the Wankdorf Stadium. 139 days after the Bernese champions' jubilation, the YB women had to admit defeat to the Grasshoppers this time. Kayla Jay McKenna gave the visitors from Zurich the lead after 16 minutes with her sixth goal of the season. However, this only lasted three minutes before Wibke Meister equalized for the champions. YB had no answer to the Grasshoppers' second goal in the 62nd minute through Marta Cazalla Garcia. While Imke Wübbenhorst's team is still unbeaten away from home, it is still waiting for its first win in front of a home crowd.

GOAL OF THE ROUND. Wibke Meister is a permanent fixture at left-back for champions YB. In the rematch of last year's play-off final against GC, however, the 30-year-old German also made an appearance in attack. And how: After 19 minutes, she marched through midfield and finished around 20 meters in front of goal. Her powerful shot landed in the bottom right-hand corner of the goal. It was only Meister's second goal since moving to the capital from Turbine Potsdam two years ago. She scored her first goal in May 2024 in the play-off quarter-final - against GC.

RANKING SITUATION. Servette is the only team in the league that is still unbeaten after seven rounds. After the surprising first draw against Rapperswil-Jona a week ago, Geneva celebrated an unchallenged 4-0 victory against bottom team Thun. Following the draw between Basel and St. Gallen, Grasshoppers are now the sole frontrunners, three points behind. Champions YB now have an eight-point deficit on the leaders after their defeat to the Zurich side. There was no winner in the basement duel between Aarau and Rapperswil-Jona. As a result, the eastern Swiss side maintained their three-point lead over the Aargau side, who are two points ahead of bottom-placed Thun.

THE NEXT ROUND. There are no matches in the Women's Super League next weekend. Instead, the 2nd Cup round is on the program. The defending champions FC Zurich will face the women of FC Sion from the NLB. The defeated finalists FC Basel will face FFV Basel, two divisions below, in a derby. Champions YB make the short trip to Ostermundigen (NLB), while Super League leaders Servette open the round on Saturday afternoon in Wädenswil (NLB).

Swiss women in foreign leagues

GERMANY. Freiburg secured an unchallenged 3-0 victory at newly promoted Union Berlin. Two Swiss players were responsible for the final score, only getting involved in the game in the second half: Alena Bienz scored after an assist from Leela Egli. It was the 22-year-old from Lucerne's first goal in a Breisgau kit and the 18-year-old from eastern Switzerland's first assist.

ENGLAND. Iman Beney picked a good time for her goal debut in the English Women's Super League. The 19-year-old from Valais, who moved to the island from Young Boys in the summer, scored for the first time in her fourth game for her new club Manchester City. And it proved decisive against the Champions League winners Arsenal. In the 88th minute, Beney got hold of the ball in the penalty area and scored the winner with a powerful shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal to make it 3:2. The attacking player had only come onto the pitch after just under an hour when the score was 1:1.

ITALY. Nati captain Lia Wälti made her first appearance for Juventus Turin after her move from Arsenal. Against Sassuolo, the 32-year-old from Bern was on the pitch for the final quarter of an hour. However, her debut for the double winners was not crowned with success. Away at Sassuolo, the Turin side, who started with Viola Calligaris in central defense, were held to a 0-0 draw at the start of the new Serie A season.

NETHERLANDS. PSV Eindhoven lost 3-1 at home to champions Twente Enschede in the top match of the 4th round. It was the first defeat for Riola Xhemaili's team, who played as usual in midfield and failed to score for the first time in the young season.

SPAIN. Sydney Schertenleib played for FC Barcelona for the first time this season and immediately recorded her first assist. In the 4-0 win over Eibar, the 18-year-old Swiss provided the assist for the Catalans' first goal as they unsurprisingly lead the table with maximum points after six rounds.

The number of the week

1562 spectators attended the rematch of last year's play-off final between the YB women and GC. It was by far the best-attended match of the 7th round of the Women's Super League and yet no comparison to the decisive duel for the championship title last May. Back then, over 10,000 spectators flocked to the Wankdorf Stadium.
