FC Thun will have to be patient before they can celebrate the first championship title in the club's history. It missed out on the victory it needed in Basel and lost 1:2.
Thun was also unable to capitalize on its second match point. A week after losing at home to Lugano, the Bernese Oberland side were virtual champions for just under two minutes at St. Jakob-Park after Valmir Matoshi made it 1-0 in the 41st minute. The goal was preceded by one of Thun's few fine combinations on the evening. Basel responded immediately. Metinho scored with a beautiful shot from around 20 meters to make it 1:1.
FCB vehemently resisted surrendering their title in front of their own fans. The soon-to-be dethroned champions showed a marked improvement on their recent performances, with just one point from three games, and were superior after the break. FC Thun struggled to create scoring opportunities and after Fabio Fehr was shown a second yellow card for unsporting behavior in the 81st minute, FCB struck twice. Albian Ajeti made it 2:1 after an ideal assist from Ibrahim Salah, and Koba Koindredi made it 3:1.
Thun now hopes for Sion
The unofficial championship celebrations had to be postponed once again. Instead of heading to Thun's Rathausplatz on Sunday night, the players will head to the Stockhorn Arena at home to watch the match between St. Gallen and Sion together from 14:00. As on Saturday evening, there will also be public viewing for the fans in the stadium.
A draw by FCSG would be enough to clinch the championship title and finally set the planned fan march in motion - from the Stockhorn Arena towards Thun city center, where a spontaneous celebration is planned, including a free night. Fans and players can hardly wait any longer.
A second Thun sending-off
Thun's impatience was also palpable in the game in Basel. The promoted team and leaders approached the task with noticeable nervousness. It even lost its nerve in the final phase. After the 1:2, Christopher Ibayi, a player on the Thun bench, was shown a red card. Both teams gave each other nothing in the duels. The players quickly became irritated and allowed themselves to be provoked. Referee Fedayi San had his work cut out to keep the commitment in check.
There was a lot at stake for both. In the end, FC Basel took the important three points in the race for a place in the European Cup. Thun and Basel continue next Sunday: Thun play at Sion, Basel at YB.
