René Weiler's path to the top of Servette FC's sporting management lasted just one season. The Geneva club officially announced the Zurich native's resignation on Sunday morning.

"This decision follows structural developments within the club's organization that have led to different visions," the Geneva club wrote in a statement. René Weiler returned to Geneva in the summer of 2023 to take over from Alain Geiger on the coaching bench. After leading Servette FC to the last 16 of the Conference League and victory in the Swiss Cup, the Zurich native decided to step down as coach and take on the role of head of sport.

Despite finishing second behind FC Basel last season, René Weiler's record is mixed. The Zurich native was unable to convince the club management to give him the funds for winter transfers that would have given coach Thomas Häberli a better chance in the title fight with FCB. He was also unable to convince Dereck Kutesa to extend his contract with Servette. The top scorer is now moving to AEK Athens on a free transfer.

The 51-year-old Weiler could now return to the coaching bench, where he celebrated great success with Anderlecht in Belgium, among others.
