Two top pairings characterize the opening round of the Central Swiss Festival in Seedorf. Wrestling king Joel Wicki will compete against Werner Schlegel, while Samuel Giger will face Pirmin Reichmuth.
Wicki and Schlegel will not only meet in the village in the canton of Uri, two wrestlers who are among the favourites for the Swiss National Championships at the end of August in Mollis in the canton of Glarus, but who have also had to accept restrictions in their preparation for the highlight of the season.
Wicki suffered a knee injury in training at the beginning of June, which necessitated minor surgery and kept the Entlebuch native away from the competition fields for four weeks. During this time, Wicki missed the mountain festival on the Stoos and the Uri Cantonal Championships.
Schlegel's forced break lasted far longer. The St. Gallen native from Hemberg had to sit out for around three months due to a ligament injury in one ankle, which made an operation unavoidable. His return was then convincing. Last Sunday, Schlegel, together with Damian Ott and Michael Moser, the strong guest from the Emmental, who were tied on points, won the North-East Swiss sub-association festival in St. Gallen.
Samuel Giger was not able to convince in St. Gallen. The Thurgau native had three wins and three defeats on his score sheet. The clash with Pirmin Reichmuth from Zug, who lives in Muotathal, will therefore be an important test for Giger.
