FC St. Gallen celebrate their sixth win in a row in all competitions. A debatable penalty leads to a 1:0 home win against Grasshoppers.
FC St. Gallen missed many opportunities to score the redemptive goal in the first hour. The strikers Chadrac Akolo and Willem Geubbels, who have been so efficient in recent matches, were unsuccessful this time despite creating chances. Both failed several times against the strong GC keeper Justin Hammel. In addition, Konrad Faber only hit the inside of the post with a cross.
Lucky for St. Gallen, unlucky for GC that the goal finally came when the Zurich side were more evenly matched. In the 81st minute, referee Lukas Fähndrich saw a foul on the Japanese player in the GC penalty area during a duel between Jovan Milosevic and Ayumu Seko. Milosevic, who had entered the duel in a similarly rustic manner, converted the penalty. The lead came under threat again, but St. Gallen goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi was on hand to hold on to the three points when Kristers Tobers finished from eleven meters.
FC St. Gallen were thus able to continue their winning run. Not something to be taken for granted given the busy schedule that coach Enrico Maassen's team has had to cope with since the start of the season. On Thursday, St. Gallen travel to Wroclaw and three days later to the amateurs of Malcantone for the Swiss Cup.
