Young Boys beat Lille 1:0 on matchday 6 of the Europa League. Thanks to an early red card against Lille and a goal from Darian Males, YB retain three important points in the Wankdorf.
The number 60 was decisive for Young Boys on Thursday evening. For 60 minutes, the Bernese outnumbered their opponents against Lille in the Europa League. And after 60 minutes, coach Gerardo Seoane's team celebrated the long sought-after goal thanks to Darian Males, which was enough to secure victory on Ene.
Red card turns the game
YB could actually have taken the lead much earlier. Shortly after the 30-minute mark, the events in the Wankdorf came thick and fast: First, Alan Virginius appeared to get a shot off in the Lille penalty area. Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi had no choice but to hold him by the shirt. Referee Sander van der Eijk not only pointed to the spot for the emergency stop, but also showed the 18-year-old Frenchman a red card.
Although Chris Bedia was unable to convert the penalty, goalkeeper Berke Özer was too quick in the right corner. But just over an hour of superior possession was enough to not only equalize Lille's superiority, which had prevailed in the first 20 minutes of the game, but to overturn it.
Males scores the winner
Young Boys immediately tried to take control of the game and created more chances at the end of the first half and at the start of the second. In the end, the savior for the hosts was Darian Males. After an hour, he tucked a feed from Virginius into the net.
And so this one goal was enough for the third win on the sixth matchday of the Europa League phase. After two recent defeats, it is an important three points in the battle to reach the play-offs. However, more points are needed against Lyon at home on January 22 and against VfB Stuttgart away a week later.
